SENEGAL PARROT
(Poicephalus senegalus)
The Senegal parrot (Poicephalus senegalus) is a small to medium-sized parrot species that is native to West Africa, including Senegal, hence its name. They have a distinctive green plumage with a gray head, bright yellow eyes, and a short, squared tail.
APPEAREANCE
These parrots have a mostly green plumage, with a bright yellow or orange belly, and a gray head with a black beak. They have a striking V-shaped red patch of feathers on their underwings, which is visible during flight or when the wings are spread. The tail feathers are mostly green with a blue tip.
Juvenile Senegal Parrots have a duller coloration and lack the red underwing patch. However, their overall appearance is similar to that of adults.
TEMPERAMENT AND CHARACTER
Senegal Parrots are generally known for their friendly and sociable temperament. They are highly intelligent birds and can be trained to do a variety of tricks, such as talking, playing fetch, and solving puzzles. They are also known for their playful and curious nature, and can be quite active and energetic.
While they are generally friendly and affectionate, Senegal Parrots can also be quite assertive and territorial, especially during breeding season. They may become aggressive towards other birds or animals if they feel their territory is being threatened.
